I don't actually prefer

Boarding in Zone 1, but it's nice to be offered a perk for volunteering to check your bags now. (At least I'm in an A seat.)

Though the whole thing seems backwards, it's really worked out in my favour:

I like checking my bags (especially when I have multiple legs).

I like not paying for things.

I like packing light (and being forced to pack light).

Couldn't have planned it better myself.
