Kibera is the largest slum in Africa, though it's hard to pin down accurate population numbers. Despite some initial misgivings, I'm very glad that we went.
We passed through the Toi market on our way to visit a community initiative where bone is turned into jewellry. (Today they get their bones in bulk from a slaughter house, but when they first started, it was sort of a recycling project to make use of discarded bone leftovers. So to speak.)
We then visited a collective to support women living with HIV. Next was a kindergarten staffed by 4 volunteers who somehow managed to provide instruction to more than 100 adorable kids in a tiny space.
We also visited a genius biogas facility where human waste is converted into clean energy.
Elijah and Leonard, from Kibera tours, were our lovely and talented guides. Highly recommended.
