Elephants live in matriarchal societies headed up by a head cow. They are known for their intelligence (ahem) and willingly embrace newcomer females, to answer your question (males live in smaller groups but tend to be more solitary).
Giraffes, on the other hand, are patriarchal, so a gent like Ed (below) is living the dream. He is the only male in his herd. He is safe from all predators. He can eat whenever and however much he wants. He has a harem of beautiful ladies, with whom he started breeding at age 4 (much earlier than he would have in the wild).
The ladies tend to do a lot of head butting, but not gentle Ed. No need. He's king.
