The clan jetties, of which there are 8 remaining, are precarious wooden structures that stretch out into the water, with a hodge podge of houses lining the piers. They are called clan jetties because they house different families, or clans, who are the descendants of Chinese settlers.
So there I was, treading lightly and deeply focused on my feet, when I was brought back to reality as the haunting sound of the call to prayer suddenly shattered the stillness.
