Good, as it turns out. Good and weird both. it was rich and creamy (yes, I realize it was ice cream) and slightly sweet and slightly something else - cheesy maybe.
It also lingered on the palate in a not unpleasant yet not necessarily entirely pleasant way. It was a fruit flavour that gives one to think.
So when I saw that the durian stands on Macalister had been replenished, I let myself be drawn into a conversation with a durian-obsessed couple from Hong Kong and a loitering local, all of whom assured me that these durians cannot compare with what you'll get in the summertime (which is when they will be a. in season b. cheaper c. sweeter) but all of whom also wanted me to give the crazy fruit a try.
And so I did.
To be honest, I still don't understand what the big deal about the smell is (there is a fancy "travel" packaging they can be tucked into to prevent assault by other passengers, it seems), but my little baby durian was quite an experience. It's still on my mind. It's under my skin.
And that's saying something for a fruit.

Maybe I missed this in another post, but how exactly do you eat this fruit? Looks pretty pointy....
I'll never forget my first encounter with Durian...and I'm happy to have never had a second. Montreal on a sweltering summer day. Chinatown packed with shoppers of all stripes. And me trying to locate the dead body.
Buuut, I've been nursing a secret desire to try the ice cream and possibly *gasp* the fruit in a tongue-teasing-aching-tooth kind of way. Cheesy aftertaste, eh? What kind of cheese?
A - I'm working on getting you a visual.
N - Do it! And count me in. And I'm thinking Brie de Meaux maybe. Also, everyone I've talked to has assure me that these wimpy Thai durians ain't got nothing on Malaysian durian (in season in the summer), of which there are a number of varieties even.
KD, you tried durian?! I'm so, so proud of you. I've made a lot of my friends try and and they weren't impressed at all hahaha. But I grew up eating it, so I'm accustomed to the smell and taste :)
It looks like you're eating very well :)
